something that seems especially fucked about a cis person getting an oscar for playing a trans woman is the implied performative unreality of trans experiences that’s going on there, like the academy is going “ohh how lifelike, you’re almost like an actual trans person!” as if you can understand trans experiences simply by acting them out in an isolated role on screen with zero negative consequences or real experience
and i also get this feeling that the academy thinks a cis man play a trans woman is akin to, say, phillip seymour hoffman playing truman capote. like to them its this incredibly lifelike and realistic caricature that’s still just that, a caricature, a performance, an artifice, and by extension they see the lives of all trans people as “performing” another sex in the same way they see jared leto performing a trans experience
it’d explain why they clearly see no problem with jared leto, who is not trans, playing and pretending to be a trans person. it’s because they don’t see trans identities as real in the first place. it’s all just performance to them.
